What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a unique and comprehensive approach to improving health and treating illness. Focusing on prevention and the use of natural methods in treatment, naturopathic doctors (N.D.s) stimulate the body’s innate ability to heal itself. By combining traditional healing methods with a modern scientific understanding of health and disease, naturopathic medicine occupies a vital place in today’s health care system.
The primary goal of naturopathic treatment is to address the cause of illness, rather than to simply treat or suppress symptoms. By treating the cause, the N.D. can promote true healing. An individualized approach to treatment, where each person’s uniqueness is taken into account, makes naturopathic medicine extremely responsive to each patient’s needs.
Naturopathic medicine is built upon a philosophy of treatment principles, which are:
To do no harm
To co-operate with the healing powers of nature
To address the fundamental cause of disease
To heal the whole person through individualized treatment
To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine
